Shankar Arumugavelu
Chief Information Officer
Shankar Arumugavelu is chief information officer for Verizon Wireless, the premier wireless service provider with the nation’s largest 4G LTE network and largest, most reliable 3G network. He is responsible for the company’s Information Technology strategy, its systems portfolio development and operation of all supporting infrastructure.
Previously, Arumugavelu served as senior vice president and chief information officer for Verizon’s consumer and mass business group. He was responsible for information systems strategy, architecture, development and management of the systems portfolio enabling sales, delivery and assurance of voice, data and video services to consumer and mass business customers in Verizon’s operating areas. He was also responsible for the development and support of Verizon FiOS TV and internet products and services.
Prior to this, Arumugavelu has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility at Verizon and its predecessor companies. Immediately before his chief information officer assignment, he was senior vice president, Network Operations Support Systems for Verizon Telecom. He was responsible for systems strategy, architecture, design, development, implementation and maintenance of engineering, service provisioning, service assurance, workforce management, dispatch, testing, surveillance and performance management systems for voice, data, video, special access and new generation communication services.
Arumugavelu began his career at GTE Data Services in 1997 as a Member of Technical Staff in the Enterprise Systems Group and advanced to increasing levels of responsibility in IT. In 1998 he was named Chief Architect of the group and was responsible for the design, development and maintenance of GTE’s service provisioning system. He was promoted to Executive Director of the Provisioning and Activation Systems group in 2002.
Arumugavelu holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of South Florida, Tampa, and a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Guindy Engineering College in Chennai, India.
